Microchipping Your Dog or Cat

By microchipping your pet, you can greatly increase the chances of finding your pet if they ever wander too far from home, or in case they were ever stolen. This safe and effective type of technology is simple to implant, and our veterinary in Quail Hollow are happy that this is a service our animal hospital provides.

If you are not familiar with animal microchipping, here are the answers to some of the questions you might have.

Q: Is it going to hurt my pet?

A: Getting a microchip implanted doesn't even require an anesthetic and it feels similar to your pet getting a vaccine or routine shot. The process usually only takes a couple of seconds.

Q: Where is the microchip implanted?

A: In most cases, the microchip gets implanted under the loose skin between a dog or cat's shoulder blades.

Q: Can my puppy get a microchip?

A: Yes, your puppy and even your kitten, can have a microchip implanted, as long as they weigh at least one pound.

Q: How does pet microchipping work?

It's important to note that the microchip does not work like GPS, which means they cannot be tracked. This type of microchip uses a technology called radio-frequency identification (RFID), which means it's a permanent type of ID that can be scanned by certain types of scanners.

While it's true that most pets normally wear collars with identification tags, there is always a chance the collar could come off, or get taken off, which is why it’s a good idea to get a microchip for your pet.
